New Orleans-Oak Plantage

Oak Alley Plantation

Before the Super Bowl, a quick visit to a typical plantation in Louisiana.

Oak Alley Plantation is a historic plantation on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Vacherie Parish, St. James Parish, Louisiana. Oak Alley is named for its distinctive visual feature, an avenue or covered walkway formed by a double row of southern live oaks approximately 800 feet long, established in the early 18th century.

The property was designated a National Historic Landmark for its architecture and landscaping, as well as for the agricultural innovation of grafting pecan trees carried out by an enslaved gardener in 1846-47.
